Calving Season Arrives at Ayavalla Preserve
First Calf of the 2026 Calving Season - with freshly tagged P100 in his ear.
Calving season is officially upon us here at Ayavalla Preserve, with our first calf arriving on May 4, 2026. As the days unfold, we expect more and more Mashona calves to make their way into the world and onto the preserve — one of the most anticipated and rewarding seasons of the year.
There is something especially meaningful about witnessing new life arrive across the pastures each spring. From quiet mornings checking the herd to watching calves take their first steps beneath the live oaks, calving season offers a reminder of the natural rhythms that shape life on the land.
Mashona cattle are particularly well suited for the environment here in North Florida. Originally developed in southern Africa, the breed is known for its hardiness, heat tolerance, maternal instincts, and ability to thrive on forage-based systems. Their adaptability to warmer climates and resilience in variable conditions make them an excellent fit for the regenerative grazing practices and long-term stewardship goals at Ayavalla Preserve.
As the season continues, we look forward to sharing more glimpses from the pastures as the newest members of the herd arrive.
